While all of this happened, I was in my cell. It was dark out, and I heard a guard yell out: “Valle! Legal visit!”

I was thrilled. I wondered if I was getting some good news. Maybe the judge issued his ruling in writing and I was going to go home soon. When I walked into the room, Alex was the only one there. I was incredibly nervous.

“I have some bad news and some good news.”

I already knew what the bad news was before she even had to say it. The judge denied me bail. What else could it be? The good news? He seemed to poke a lot of holes and raised a lot of questions in the prosecution’s case that we could use as a target. But I was distraught. How did we lose? The judge seemed to be in our corner.

Alex then got into the issue with the “token” and asked me about it. I was absolutely furious. They were seriously arguing that this was an overt act and the judge bought it? While Alex wrote, I explained everything.

At the beginning of every year, I got twenty Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association cards. The PBA is the police union, and cops could give these cards out to friends and family. If someone was pulled over for a traffic violation by a cop and they had a PBA card, it was very likely that the cop would exercise discretion and let the person go with a warning. I always had a handful of extra cards, so I asked Kathleen if she had any friends who she thought might want one. She immediately gave me the name of one of her friends.
